Hey there, Future Historian! Let's embark on a journey to 1982, where Operation Peace for Galilee took place. Fasten your seat belts, we're going back in time!

Backdrop ๐ŸŒ

  • Israel planned to invade Lebanon (again! They had done so in 1978 too).

  • They just needed an excuse, which came when some Palestinians tried to off the Israeli ambassador in London.

  • Important note: These attackers weren't BFFs with Yasser Arafat, a Palestinian leader. But Israel didn't care.

Operation in Action ๐Ÿช–

  • Israel went all out
    • ๐Ÿ‘ฅ 170,000 troops

    • ๐Ÿšš 3,500 tanks

    • โœˆ๏ธ 600 fighter planes

  • The United Nations' peacekeepers? Well, imagine trying to stop a tsunami with a surfboard. Impossible!

  • Outcome? Israel was very successful in crushing the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) forces.

  • But, and this is a big but, a massive number of civilians got caught in the crossfire.

    • Thousands died

    • Hundreds of thousands lost their homes

What did Israel Want? ๐Ÿ“ข

  • Ariel Sharon, Israel's Defence Minister, had said the plan was:

    • Kick out Palestinian forces

    • Smash their bases

    • Create a 40-km "No-Palestinians-Allowed" zone in southern Lebanon

  • But Ariel had bigger dreams! The Israelis surrounded Beirut, cutting off food, water, and blasting the PLO bases which, unfortunately, were in crowded neighborhoods.

    • Picture this: Beirut was being bombarded from all sides, every day, for two months.

    • On the worst day, 127 air raids took place. Talk about a bad day at the office!
