Culture-bound syndromes (CBS) 🎭

Have you ever felt nervous before a big test? Well, imagine if that feeling of nervousness was considered a specific illness in your culture! Culture-bound syndromes are like that - a set of symptoms recognized as an illness in specific cultures. Let's dig into some examples.

DSM & culture-bound syndromes 🌍

  • DSM-IV & DSM-5: These are big ol' manuals that psychologists use to diagnose mental disorders.
  • CBS in DSM-IV: Think of them as mental disorders with hometown pride! Recognized only in specific places.
  • CBS in DSM-5: Upgraded to "cultural syndromes." Slightly new name, same fascinating concept!

Examples of cultural syndromes in DSM-5 📜

Ataque de nervios ("attack of nerves")

  • Found in: Hispanic people & the Philippines.
  • Symptoms: Uncontrollable screaming, trembling, feeling hot, and more.

Real-World Example: Imagine freaking out after a big argument with a friend and not remembering it afterward. It's seen as a cultural response to stress.
