🎉 Hey future Psychologists! Let's dive into something super intriguing and, unfortunately, quite real: "Karoshi," or death from overwork. Fasten your seat belts; we're taking a trip to understand how work can be deadly. 😱

Karoshi - a scary introduction

  • Origin: Reported first in Japan, 1969.
  • Cases: Death from overwork and "karojisatsu" (suicide from overwork) are increasingly common.
  • Real World Example: Imagine a 29-year-old person who seemed perfectly healthy, dropping dead due to overwork. It's real, and it's happening!

Five deadly work patterns (uehata, 1991)

  • Extremely Long Working Hours or Night Shifts: Like pulling an all-nighter but every day!
  • Working Continuously Without Break: Non-stop action, but not the fun kind.
  • High-Pressure Jobs: Picture a Wall Street trader; time is money!
  • Extremely Taxing Physical Work: Think about construction workers lifting heavy things all day.
  • Around-the-Clock, High-Pressure Work: Doctors, nurses, you name it.

Stress & mental strain (karasek, 1979)

  • Jobs that demand a lot but offer low control increase stress.
  • Features: Demand, controllability, predictability, ambiguity.
  • Real World Example: Doctors constantly feel this pressure; saving lives isn't easy.
