Center of mass & center of gravity fun facts ๐ŸŽˆ

  • Center of Mass (CoM): Picture an object, like a basketball. The CoM is the point where you can imagine the entire weight of the ball is focused. It’s evenly distributed around this point.

  • Center of Gravity (CoG): Think of the spot on the basketball where gravity pulls the strongest. That's the CoG.

  • Same, but Different: Often, for things like our bodies or a tennis racket, the CoM and CoG are in the same spot. But remember, CoG is all about gravity's pull! So, it's mainly vertical and doesn't think side-to-side.

  • Movable Point: CoM can change! For people, body types, age, gender, and how you move can shift your CoM. Imagine a dancer mid-twirl ๐Ÿฉฐ. Her CoM changes as she moves!

๐ŸŒ Real-World Example: A boomerang's CoM isn't in its material; it’s floating in the space between its arms!

Why care about com? ๐Ÿ“Œ

  • Balance: Knowing CoM helps maintain balance. Picture a tightrope walker ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™‚๏ธ. If he leans too much and his CoM shifts out of line with his feet, down he goes!
  • Aerobatics: Want to see a diver flip in mid-air? That flip rotates around the CoM!
  • Leaping Ahead: In sports like long jump, how the CoM moves during the jump is key to how far the athlete goes.

Moment of inertia spin me round โฑ๏ธ

  • Definition: Ever tried spinning a hula hoop around you? How tough it is to spin depends on its moment of inertia. It's about both its weight and how that weight is spread out.

๐Ÿฉ Real-World Example: Think of a donut. If more of its "stuffing" is further from its center, it's harder to spin. But if most of its weight is near the middle, it's a breeze!
